On Tuesday, I posted a half-marathon training plan on my blog.
The next day, I woke up at went for the 35-minute 2/1 run/walk that I had scheduled on said training plan.
Everything went fine…till I got home and started stretching and immediately noticed that my shin was swollen and tender. It’s not hurting in the posterior tibialis area, which has been the problem area for the last 6 months or so, but instead hurts more towards the middle of my shin.
I.was.so.irritated.
I iced my shin for 20 minutes, and then took Advil. If I take Advil, I’m pretty desperate. I try to avoid it.
About an hour later, I was super impressed by how much better my shin hurt. “Hooray!” I thought, “Everything is okay!”
A few hours later, the Advil began to wear off, and that’s when I realized that everything just seemed okay because of the Advil. Dang it!
Here’s what I don’t understand: How in the WORLD can I think everything is fine while I’m running, and as soon as I stop, realize there’s a problem. What IS this???
Do you use Advil for running pains? How do you choose when it’s okay to take, and when not.

Ugh!!! I am so sorry. I know how frustrated you must feel. Coming back from an injury really is quite the process. I hope that by icing your shin some of the swelling will go down so that you can continue your training plan. If it isn’t one thing it is always the other. :/

UGH! How frustrating! Is it better now? I hope it went away?
I always forget to take meds, so I usually use nothing, unless someone reminds me.

NO! This makes me sad for you
. I try not to take drugs like you but when I get a bad headache or cramps some Ibuprofen is the only thing that helps so I go for it. I know you are going to hate me when I say this, but I’ve never had pain from running enough to take medicine..

Oh no!! I’m so sorry and know that’s super frustrating. I’m terrible in that I often take Advil for my aches and pains. I hope that your shin feels better soon.

Okay, your picture made me giggle. I often feel that way so I can relate. I don’t take Advil too often for running aches and pains, I consider those badges of honor – like my bling. LOL When I first started running, I would ice every single night, no matter if I felt I needed it or not. I swear by it. Maybe you could try icing every night?

I use Naproxen, almost daily, to help keep inflammation down, and I will use Advil or Tylenol when I’m sore after running. Just never beforehand, because I read somewhere thats bad for you.
I think its the happy running endorphins that keep us from feeling the pain until we stop running. Because when we’re done those little happy blockers slow down and allow room for the painful unhappy things
Hope your shin is ok!

Oh sorry to hear that!! I used to just take lots of advil when I was in pain so that I could keep running, but I decided that was incredibly unhealthy and stopped!!!
