On Friday, I had the strangest sensation. I was making Husband Saign’s birthday cake, and I reached for the mixing spoon, when…OUCH! Extreme pain.
It seemed that lifting my left arm, or putting any sort of pressure or weight on my left arm caused a painful sensation in my left back/shoulder area.
I’ve never had a pinched nerve, but judging on how others have acted when they had a “pinched nerve,” I concluded that this must be my ailment. Basically, my mobility was limited by pain I experienced when I moved my arm in certain ways.
I woke Husband Saign up and tried to convince him to give me a massage, but apparently waking your husband to request a massage is an ineffective way to gain a massage.
So I went to bed, wondering what was wrong with me.
The next morning, my back/shoulder still hurt if I moved my arm in certain ways. I went for a run, which loosened it up a bit, but still, just lifting my water bottle to my mouth caused me pain.
As far as I could tell, the problem seems to be a huge knot in my shoulder muscle. It’s a pretty crazy knot…super swollen and large.
My treatment strategies are as follows:
- Ibuprofen.
- Massage.
- Stretch
- Challenging myself to mobilize my shoulder as much as possible.
My mother-in-law suggested that it may be from sleeping in a weird position. This made me feel a little better because I couldn’t figure out how I had mangled my body so horribly, and was simply blaming my age. Now at least I can blame my age, and poor sleep positioning.
It’s getting better, little by little. I still can’t lift weights or swim, but I can get dressed without too much pain! (I also kind of liking being forced to take a break from lifting).
Have you ever experienced anything like this? Any advice for recovery?

Yikes! I hope that it is from just sleeping in a strange position. That has happened to me before. I hope you feel better and definitely keep stretching, massaging and working on shoulder mobility.
